In some cases, these ID cards include biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, which can be used to verify a person's identity. The popularity of using electronic methods to verify ID has also been increasing. In Canada, e-ID for criminal record checks has been around for a number of years. Originally, this was done using out of wallet questions based on someone's credit report. In recent years though, this has been expanded to allow for other methods, such as verifying ID documents electronically and using facial recognition to match the person to the ID document. The UK government recently passed legislation which enabled the use of e-ID in all facets of public life, including conducting criminal record checks. Similar to Canada, the UK process for criminal record checks uses electronic validation of ID documents paired with facial recognition. In these cases, the ID verification is essentially outsourced to an accredited third party. Regardless of whether the ID verification is done internally, or electronically through a third party, it is essential to understand the potential variances in ID information so that you can conduct a thorough and accurate background check on an individual. Failing to take these differences into account can result in errors, inaccuracies, and even false accusations. In conclusion, this is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion and analysis of all the potential challenges which can arise around the globe when conducting ID verification. Instead, the intent is to raise awareness that the typical identifiers for people, such as names, addresses, and ID documents, can vary significantly from one country or region to another. As a result, organizations should review their policies and procedures so that they can be updated and adapted as necessary.
