MAY/JUNE 2023 Mid-Year & Milestones By Scott Maloney, PBSA Chair B y all accounts, the 2023 PBSA Mid-Year Legislative & Regulatory Conference was a complete success! We had a great conference with an impressive lineup of sessions including presentations from some of our regular contributors, industry legends and industry thought leaders. We were able to hold an in-person PBSA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill for the first time since 2019. In person and in office with our legislators, together we're working to educate on the value of professional background screening while continuing the familiarity of our association with those lawmakers. Our session rooms, meeting spaces, exhibit halls and networking opportunities were full of enthusiastic screening professionals from all avenues of our marketspace. We had 418 registered attendees from over 184 companies or organizations in attendance at our Mid-Year Conference. The day following the conclusion of our Mid-Year Conference is used by many of our attendees to participate in the PBSA Advocacy Day and a primary reason for our Mid-Year Conference. This year we had 61 registered advocates making up 15 teams attending prescheduled meetings with legislators to educate and inform our political representatives on the PBSA and professional background screening in general. Our PBSA advocates use these meetings to continue our development of relationships and to identify advocates of professional background screening on Capitol Hill. Beyond this opportunity to develop increased awareness of our profession and association, our advocates delivered several specific messages related to Model Forms and Data Privacy considerations. In addition to the traditional conference and Advocacy Day activities, we spent some time discussing specific and immediate opportunities for our association members. Important member updates included: • Legislation – For those able to attend our Tuesday Government Relations session, you're aware of the focus and efforts our volunteers and partners are investing in some of the proposed legislation in California. No doubt a focal point for our association and members as we move through 2023 into 2024. • Strategic Plan – As we've shared in the past, our current Strategic Plan has 4 primary focal points: IN THIS ISSUE Mid-Year & Milestones 1 California Legislative Updates 4 Tips for Conducting Research at the Courts 5 Using AI to Strengthen Communications 7 Mission (Not) Impossible: What Does PBSA Need From You? 8 A Candidate by Any Other Name… 11 Unlocking the Full Potential of Recruiting 13 Embracing Technology in Employment Verification 15 Thank You, 2023 Mid-Year Conference Sponsors! 17 Thank You, 2023 Mid-Year Conference Exhibitors! 18 PBSA Accredited Companies 19 Mission, Comments & Article Submission 20 Except where otherwise indicated, articles are copyright © by PBSA 2023.
