Navigating Complexities in Pre-employment Screening in the U.S.: Addressing Key Challenges Continued from page 13 Globalization Impact on Cross-Border Screening As U.S. organizations expand remote hiring and, in some cases, globally, employment screening providers can often encounter growing complexities in verifying candidate information across borders. A 2023 survey by Gusto found that 75% of U.S.-based small and midsize businesses plan to expand their international workforce over the next 1-3 years, highlighting the need for solutions that can navigate cross-border verification challenges. Providers must be equipped with the capabilities to manage not only the complexities of non-native data access but also the compliance requirements of multiple jurisdictions. This could include coordination with international verification agencies, reconciling differences in verification practices, overcoming language barriers and ensuring compliance with cross-border data protection regulations. Strategies for Overcoming U.S. Screening Challenges To address these challenges, organizations should seek capabilities and solutions that address key aspects of the screening process, including: • Compliance intelligence: Ensure solutions have built-in regulatory intelligence that adapts to federal and state regulations; and prioritizes rigorous data privacy and protection measures. This can reduce the risk of non-compliance and minimize the administrative burden on organizations. • Cross-state-lines and border screening expertise: Consider working with a solutions provider with a national, or global footprint and can offer access to data cross- borders. The right capabilities can help facilitate smoother screening processes across jurisdictions while aligning with local regulatory requirements. • Trustworthy data and technology-driven innovation: Solutions that aggregate data from trusted sources and provide tools for thorough verification can reduce discrepancies, streamline operations and enhance decision-making. • Verificationprecision:Utilize capabilities that provide access to trusted, up-to-date sources for employment verification, income history, fraud authentication and identity verification. This can help reduce manual intervention for reviews, lessen friction and accelerate the screening process by mitigating discrepancies and providing reliable data. As businesses continue to evolve, adopting a comprehensive suite of capabilities ensures that they are equipped to meet both current and future screening challenges. Whether ensuring compliance with U.S. regulations or expanding their workforce nationally and globally, organizations can stay ahead of the curve by leveraging integrated, technology-driven verification solutions that deliver fast, secure, and reliable in every screening. l John Tsefrikas, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Verification Solutions, Experian, has over 20 years in financial services, driving data solutions from ideation to execution.
