Given that the COC may potentially be a legal document, any tampering of information or mishandling of the COC and all data within would require an investigation and subsequent imposition of penalties according to the law. Naturally, all data collected is protected and kept confidential. Importance of The Chain of Custody All these processes of the COC guarantee donors that the specimen they have provided is handled securely, and according to the systematic guidelines provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in their required guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs.
